Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Bo Garner on December 18, 2009:

Each Tuesday for about 18 months, I had the pleasure of "directing" for Art at the Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic studio in Austin where he had been a "reader" for many years. As his director, I sat outside his recording booth and ran the equipment while he read. We faced each other through a window and talked via headsets.

Usually we were assigned a book of Texas or Latin American history, and he really enjoyed those. He'd often stop to tell me more about a passage. Once when we were reading about the history of San Antonio, he exclaimed, "We knew them!" and he explained how his family had come to know the family of the historic figure in the book.

Sometimes we took a moment to talk about his tank command in Europe or his work in Viet Nam. I wish I'd seen through the humble, modest way he talked about this and asked more questions!

But the first thing he did every Tuesday morning was grin and ask me how I was doing. He was always a gentleman, and I do miss him and his kind nature.
