Be Thou At Peace

Retired U.S. Army Brig. Gen. John A. Maurer, 90, of Fredericksburg was called to join our Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015.

He was born in Mansfield, Ohio, on Feb. 9, 1925, the son of Anton and Margaret Maurer, becoming the first American born in his family's lineage.

His formative years were spent in Mansfield while attending St. Peter's Catholic Church and School. In high school, he was active in extracurricular activities. He was elected class president and graduated as salutatorian in 1942. After attending the University of Dayton, he was called to duty in the U.S. Army where he served for two years. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant to enter the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He graduated in 1949 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant with detail in field artillery. On June 18, 1949, he married Marjorie Schnug, his high school classmate, and began a memorable family life and military career.

Duty assignments included attendance at military service schools and command and staff positions around the world. The schools included Army Ground General School, Basic and Advanced Officers' Field Artillery Courses, Redstone Missile Officers' Course, German Command and Staff College, Armed Forces Staff College and Army War College.

Command and staff assignments included battery, battalion, group, division corps, J3 HQ MACV and Pentagon level and CENTAG and AFCENT with NATO.

Brig. Gen. Maurer completed his 36-year Army career as Commander V Corps Artillery and Wiesbaden Military Community, Wiesbaden, Germany. He retired from active service Aug. 1, 1979. He was awarded the Army's Distinguished Service Medal. In addition, he was the recipient of many other awards and citations, both U.S. and foreign.

Retirement years were devoted to family, gardening and golf. He was a parishioner of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he was a lector and Eucharistic minister for 10 years.

He was preceded in death by Marjorie, his wife of 65 years; his mother and father; daughter Pamela McClung; son-in-law Samuel T.S. Su, M.D.; and sisters-in-law Joanne Schnug, Rita Schnug and Barbara Maurer.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Su of Akron, Ohio, and Myra Petty and husband Steve of Pasadena, Texas; brothers-in-law Robert Schnug and Thomas Schnug of Mansfield; sister and brother-in-law Richard and Elizabeth Lehman of Mansfield; brother and sister-in-law Walter and Sally Maurer of Simi Valley, Calif.; grandchildren Carleen George and husband Daniel of The Woodlands, Texas, Nathaniel Su and wife Kileigh of Akron, Sean Petty and wife Jenni of Deer Park, Texas, Chad Petty and wife Kelli of Spring Hill, Tenn., Megan McClung of Austin, Texas, and Evan McClung of Imperial, Pa.; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at The Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity, with interment with his wife at the USMA cemetery, West Point, N.Y., at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in John's memory may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church for "The Glory of God" Building Campaign, 9149 Ely's Ford Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22407.
