West Point, 1949

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Terry Powers on November 19, 2022:

Robert T. Fallon Sr. of Lumberville died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, at his home. He was 90.

Known to family as Papa, to friends as Bob, and to students and others as Doc, he was born in the Bronx, New York City, June 6, 1927, and a resident of Lumberville, Pa., for the past 24 years. Bob also lived in Penllyn, Pa., from 1972 to 1993.

A West Point Military Academy graduate, Class of 1949, Bob served in the U.S. Army until he retired in 1970, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Bob entered the Army with his West Point class in June 1945, during World War II. He served in Korea in 1950, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. Bob later served in Germany (1953 to 1956), returned to Korea in 1965, and then served in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966.

While in military service, Bob received his master's degree in History from Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y. He earned a second master's degree and Ph.D. in English from Columbia University while teaching at West Point. Following his military career, Bob became a professor in the English department at LaSalle until his retirement in 1995. While at LaSalle, Bob published three academic works on John Milton. He served as president and was later recognized as an Honored Scholar of the Milton Society of America. Bob embarked on a third career as an author when the first of his Theatergoer's Guides to Shakespeare, a four-book series, was published in 2001. He also served as the vice dean of the Shakespeare Society of Philadelphia. All who knew Bob Papa Doc, were enriched by his wonderful wit, his intelligent and always challenging conversation, and his joy of living. He will be remembered and missed for a very long time.

Bob was the son of the late John Edward Fallon and late Winifred Gabriel Hanigan. He is survived by his son, Robert T. Fallon Jr. and daughter-in-law, Debra Adams Fallon, of Cooksburg, Pa., and his daughter Frances Fallon Schuster and son-in-law, William Fallon Schuster, of Cornwall, N.Y., and their children, Bob's grandson, Whitney Forest Schuster, and granddaughter, Laurel Fallon Schuster. Bob also is survived by his former wife, Mary Patricia Snyder Fallon of Syracuse, N.Y., now of Turnersville, N.J.

A viewing and memorial service will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at Garefino Funeral Home, 12 North Franklin St., Lambertville, N.J. A full military service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 22, in Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, with a reception to follow.
