William Wesley Bumpus
Manufacturer's Representative

William Wesley Bumpus, 76, a retired manufacturing representative for electronics companies, died of a pulmonary embolism March 24 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

Mr. Bumpus was born in Covington, Ky., graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1949.

He entered the Air Force and was stationed in England, training F-84 pilots in loading, flying, arming and dropping tactical atomic weapons.

He resigned from the Air Force after learning that his son had a rare disease, and entered the Air Force Reserve, serving as a liaison officer with the U.S. Air Force Academy.

He served four terms on the Army Science Board, and worked on a seawater desalination program, an effort that later proved vital to U.S. troops during the Persian Gulf War.

Mr. Bumpus worked for Scientific Devices of Washington D.C. Inc. as a manufacturing representative for electronics companies, in particular Systron Donner and the smaller Ithaco Inc.

He continued to work part-time and retired in 1993 to Berlin.

His marriage to Kathleen Biram ended in divorce.
