David J. Chandler

Funeral for Lieutenant Colonel David Jarrett Chandler USA (Ret) was Tuesday, June 20. He died Wednesday, June 14 at his home in Oxford, Miss.

He was the son of Colonel and Mrs. F.C. Chandler. His maternal grandparents, Captain Andrew Ramsay and Mrs. "Zaidee" Jarrett Ramsay were pioneer settlers of Toccoa.

He was President of the Toccoa High School Senior Classs of 1941, an Eagle Scout, and attended North Georgia College prior to entering the Army in 1943.

Under the auspices of Senator Richard B. Russell he won a competitive appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point graduating in the class of 1949.

During his twenty years of military service he was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division in Germany, and served in Korea and Vietnam. He was Professor of Military Science at the University of Mississippi and Texas A&M during his active military career.

He became a teacher in the Oxford, Mississippi School system upon completion of his military career. He retired from teaching in 1990.

He was a member of Toccoa Presbyterian Church, West Point Leadership Council, National Education Association, and the Mississippi Education Association.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Chandler of Oxford, Miss.; daughter, Elizabeth C. Baines of Georgetown, Ind.; son, George F. Chandler of Decatur; brother F.C. Chandler of Atlanta; and two grandchildren.

Graveside service with military honors was held Tuesday, June 20 at St. Peters Cemetery in Oxford, Miss. with the Rev. Sam Marshall officiating.
