Be Thou At Peace

USAF COL John D. Woodson, 48, a native of Sioux City, died unexpected at his home in Dayton, Ohio. He was stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio.

He was born Jan, 26 1925 and was the son of J.S. Woodson, former associate editor and editorial writer for The Journal and Mrs. Woodson, now of De Land, Fla.

He was a graduate of Central High School and attended Morningside College for one year. He enlisted in the Air Corps for aviation cadet training and was commissioned in 1945 as a 2LT with a rating as a navigator. He was appointed to the U.S> Military Academy at West Point, N.Y,, where he graduated in 1949.

He spent a year in Vietnam as deputy commander of Bien Hoa AFB. He was decorated by the governement of South Vietnam with the Vietnamese Medal of Honor. While in Vietnam he also recieved the Bronze Star.

Among other decorations he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three clusters in 1951 in Korea where he flew 56 combat missions.

He served as group navigator and wing adjutant in 1954 at Sembach Air Base, Germany and later was an exchange officer withthe Royal Canadian Air Force.

After Vietnam he was assigned as the director of comptroller systems Air Force Data Systems Design Center.

Survivors include a daughter, Murray of Hattiesburg, Miss.; a son, John, of Ft. Lauderdake, Fla., his parents, and a sister, Mrs Robert B. (Marjorie) Howe of Sioux City.

A military funeral service will be conducted Thursday afternoon in the chapel at USMA, West Point. Burial will be on the academy grounds.

He was married from 1950 to 1971 to Mary Orlean Hauna. As Orelan Hanna Roewer (De4 4, 1928 - Nov 10, 2013) she passed away later in Macon, GA.
