USMA Class of 1949. Brigadier General.

Brigadier General Richard Tallman, age 47 years, was the eighth American General to die in the Vietnam War. He was killed by a lone North Vietnamese artillery shell after landing in An Loc for an inspection of South Vietnamese units at 12:45PM and was medevaced to a hospital in Saigon, where he died. Two other officers in his group were also wounded. He was a native of Honesdale, Pennsylvania and was promoted to Brigadier General on June 29th, 12 days before his death. He was command's Chief of Staff since January 1972 and was named Deputy Commander on June 28. The area around An Loc was being shelled daily by the North Vietnamese and more than 50 shells hit the area on Sunday. General Tallman was a combat infantry officer in Korea and was serving his third tour of duty in Vietnam. Survivors included his widow and seven children. One son graduated from West Point in June 1972. General Tallman was a member of the USMA Class of 1949.
