Dr. Edward Weber Ivy, (Age 79)
Retired Air Force Colonel and native of the Hickory Withe Community in Fayette County and resident of Falls Church, Virginia at the time of his death, died Monday, July 24, 2006, at the residence of a son at Maitland, Florida.

Dr. Ivy was a graduate of Fayette County High School in Somerville and received his appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1945.

He graduated in 1949 and served for twenty years as an officer in the Air Force. Dr. Ivy flew 4000 hours on B-36 combat crews during the Cold War (1950s) with assignments in the missile and manned space flight development program (early 1960s) that included three years at the NASA mission control center in Houston (space communications) during the Gemini and Apollo flights to the moon (late 1960s).

Dr. Ivy earned his MS and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University while in the Air Force.

Dr. Ivy retired as an Air Force Colonel and retired a second time from the MITRE Corporation, Space Systems Division in McLean, VA, where he was involved in space communications planning at NASA headquarters for Space Station Freedom, a joint U.S., Europe, Japan, and Canada program.

Dr. Ivy found much enjoyment in operating his farm in the Hickory Withe Community and serving as founder and president of the Hickory Withe Development Corporation that is engaged in the development of residential and commercial property in Fayette County.

Dr. Ivy had been a member of Who¹s Who International since 1984. He was elected to the board and named President/CEO of the organization in 1993 and served in that position through 1999.

His interests included music, private flying, golf, tennis, and travel.

Dr. Ivy is survived by two sons, E. Weber Ivy Jr. of Alexandria, VA. Christopher G. Ivy and wife Kay Marcey Ivy of Maitland, FL; his grandchildren, Audrey V. Ivy and Ethan C. Ivy both of Maitland; and his sister, Nancy Ivy McCraw of Germantown.

Funeral services for Dr. Ivy will be at 4 p.m., Thursday at the Hickory Withe Presbyterian Church. Interment, with military honors, will be in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Hickory Withe.

There will be visitation for family and friends at the church one hour prior to services. Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home of Somerville is in charge of arrangements.
