Oliver earned four varsity letters in tennis where he was a No. 1 singles and doubles player for four years and as the top player in squash for two seasons. He led the Black Knights to four wins over Navy in tennis with the Black Knights posting an impressive record of 64-23 during his tenure. Oliver registered numerous impressive wins during his tennis career, including a noteworthy victory over Dick Savitt of Cornell to win the Eastern Intercollegiate Tennis Championship. He also defeated future Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion Vic Seixas.

Prior to his appointment at West Point, Oliver won the National Interscholastic Tennis Championships and then lost just five singles tennis matches during his career at West Point.

Oliver played on the first Army squash team in 1948 and was a team captain of both the tennis and squash programs during his senior season. He played squash for two years and helped the squad compile a 15-6 record.

Following his graduation from the Academy, Oliver turned to coaching and guided the Air Force men's team for five years.
