Be Thou At Peace

Posted by William Ganus Green "Buck" on December 31, 2015:

This man, William Lee Green III was known to his loved owns as "Buck". My name is William Ganus Green, at my birth I was given the nickname "Buck", named after my grandfather.

After graduating from the USMA in 1949, he joined the USAF and eventually became a flight instructor and one of the first fighter pilots to participate in mid-air refueling. On January 26, 1955, during a routine training flight near Albany, Ga, Buck's plane experienced engine failure and began falling toward the earth. He had two options, eject from the cockpit and allow his plane to go down in a residential neighborhood, or remain in his plane and steer it clear of civilian lives. My grandfather chose the latter. He left behind his wife [my grandmother] Margaret Harrison Green and his only son [my father] William Lee Green IV "Bill". My father was eight months old at the time of Buck's death.

I have spent my life idolizing this man, listening to the wonderful stories about his heart, his sense of humor, and his loyalty to family. I have spent my life trying to live up to the standards he set.

RIP. We love you.
