Gilbert Xavier Cheves, Jr. of Vonore, TN passed away October 26, 2008 at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville, TN.

He was born May 22, 1926 in Junction City, Kansas. Gilbert graduate from West Point in 1947.

He served in the Korean War with the rank of Captain and received the Purple Heart.

He was a licensed private pilot.

He loved sailing and motoring on the Gulf Coast waters and the rivers of Tennessee. He enjoyed amateur photography.

For many years he attended his West Point and 82nd Group reunions.

He worked as an engineer on the Space Program.

Preceded in death by: Parents, Major General Gilbert & Mary Cheves; Sister, Dorothy McCallum.

Survived by: Wife, Jane Cheves of Vonore, TN; Daughters, Patty (Eddy) Brooks of Ponte Vedra, FL, Mary (Steve) Deadwyler of Alpharetta, GA; Son, Gilbert X. (Mary) Cheves of Escanaba, MI; Grandchildren, Kyle (Emmy) Brooks, Patricia Brooks, Belle Cheves, and Maddie Deadwyler; nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be held by the family at a future date.
