Edward W. Whitney "Ted" Wagner of Port Ludlow, Wash., died peacefully at home on Oct. 4, 2013.

Born on May 16, 1927, Ted was raised in Mountain Lakes, N.J., and Annisquam, Mass.

He was a 1949 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point with a degree in mechanical and civil engineering.

Upon graduation, he was transferred to the Air Force, trained in jet reconnaissance and flew F-80 "Shooting Star" fighter jets.

He married his hometown sweetheart, Audrey Leek. They had three children, Victoria Anne, John Whitney and Peter Whitney, who were raised in Chappaqua, N.Y.

Upon retirement from a sales career with Buffalo Forge Co., he went into the lumber business with his sons in Canaan, N.H. He shared his passion for machinery and manufacturing with his sons. That passion has developed into Pacific Western Timbers Inc. of Bremerton, Wash., and Sustainable Mahogany Industries Ltd. of Fiji.

Ted was a gentleman with integrity and understood the value of a good education. He was the moral compass for his extended family, offering solid, sage advice tempered with his great sense of humor. Well known in the Port Ludlow community, he especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his daughter Victoria Barri and her husband, Joseph Vozarik, of East Lyme, Conn.; sons John (and his wife Barbara) of Seabeck, Wash., and Peter (and his wife Meredith) of Port Ludlow, Wash.; and two grandchildren, Caroline and James Barri of Old Lyme, Conn.

He also leaves behind his dear friend Sallie Lawler of Port Ludlow, and an extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Audrey, in 2004.

A memorial service is set for 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 26 at St. Pauls Church in Port Gamble, Wash. A reception follows at the Hood Canal Vista Pavilion in Port Gamble.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
