At LZ Gold I was a young Sgt assigned to the 3/22. Then LTC Bender led us that day in a way that Army awards cannot do justice. The smoke of the battlefield was so thick you could hardly see. As I walked across the LZ I was numb from the battle and the fear. LTC Bender walked by me and asked me if I was all right.His confidence reassured me. Several years later as a brand new 2Lt I reported to Brigade headquarters at the 172d and there was the Colonel. I served under him for the remainder of his tour in Alaska. I met Ms Bender several times. To his children I say your father was a true hero. |
