Paul Allen Paulson

West Point, 1949

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Terry Powers on December 22, 2022:

September 5, 1926 to May 5, 2011

Paul Allen Paulson, born on September 5, 1926 in New Haven, Connecticut, succumbed to complications from pancreatic cancer on May 5, 2011 at San Diego Hospice.

He began training early at Valley Forge Military Academy before his appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Lieutenant Colonel Paulson's decorated career as an Army officer lasted over 20 years, spanned several continents and included tours in Korea and Vietnam.

After retiring from the military, Paul took on a career that embraced his natural talents: patience and coaching. His daughter, Debra, and son, Scott, remember homework help sessions where "he never gave us an answer but he taught us how to find it." Paul spent many years working in the state of Maine education system. He earned a Masters' degree in Reading Disabilities.

Upon retirement from his civilian career, Paul spent countless hours as a volunteer and advocate for seniors' computer literacy. He developed a coach-based training method that was adopted by the local public library system in Bangor, Maine.

He became a prolific writer, often winning grants and computer equipment donations for local senior organizations. He spoke fondly of all his friends in the San Diego library system where he taught free computer classes.

He was a sportsman and all-around athlete. As a young man he skied the slopes of Austria with his shepherd Orkus; competed in slalom and downhill racing and taught his family cross-country skiing in the woods of Maine. He was an avid golfer and competed in racewalking events well into his seventies. He would play any game that used a racquet: tennis, squash, racquetball and he excelled at them all.

We miss his gentle spirit and his loving smile.

Interment was at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. Military honors memorial is planned for September.

Paul is survived by his wife, Virginia; daughter, Debra; son, Scott; and nieces Carol and Joyce. Paul truly believed that life is an education. He wanted us to learn every day.
