Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Mahlon Allison Smith, III on November 11, 2010:

Dear Terry,

We lost you 56 years ago today, but have felt your spirit with us for all of these years. When we came to visit your resting place at West Point early in 2005, it felt like being greeted by you and your friends in a comfortable place, the chilly breeze and snowy ground no longer noticeable.

Your grandson, named and nicknamed after you, carries a copy of the portrait that Gillis painted of you posthumously, always holding you in the highest regard, as do we all.

We are so proud of you, for your accomplishments during your short life and for your bravery and sacrifice in ensuring the safety of others without regard to the personal danger you faced.

We have always felt your spirit close at hand, feeling when you are proud of us and when you would like for us to do a little better. We have always felt your unconditional love.

May we all find a way to reflect your Golden Spirit, knowing that the Great Companion has always been with you, those you love, those who love you and all who love.

As our own dear Dolly would say, "All things work together for good."

We all love you and will always remember you, as will many of your generations to come.

Scott, Deb and Terry
