West Point graduate, who went on to become one of our nation's first Airforce jet pilots, flying an F-86 Sabre jet. While stationed at the Ethan Allen Airforce base in Burlington, Vermont, Terry's squadron was scrambled to intercept an unidentified aircraft bearing towards the Canadian border at dawn on Veterans Day in 1954. After take-off, his fighter jet experienced a low altitude "flameout" while over Burlington. He declined to bail out of his jet in an effort to make a forced landing. Terry guided his jet into an unoccupied drive-in theater parking lot, thereby avoiding additional casualties.
