EARL LOCHHEAD OBITUARY

RETIRED LIEUTENANT COLONEL EARL JAMES LOCHHEAD, JR. passed away peacefully at a local hospital on November 16th, 2007.

Earl was born on May 7, 1926 in Dallas, Texas, the son of Earl J. and Sadie Lochhead. He lived in Terrell for several years before moving to Austin, Texas where he graduated from high school and attended the University of Texas for one year. During this time World War II was calling up many young men.

Earl always wanted to be a soldier and his dream came true when he was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point by then Senator Lyndon Baines Johnson.

Earl graduated from West Point in 1949 and shortly thereafter met and married Isabel Montes Diaz of Puerto Rico.

Earl and Isabel became the proud parents of three sons and were married for 55 years before Isabel passed away in March of 2005. Isabel was the love of his life.

Although Lieutenant Colonel Lochhead did not serve in World War II, it wasn't long before the Korean conflict emerged and he was called to duty. Earl distinguished himself in Korea by serving with honor during his duty and was awarded the Bronze Star with a V for valor for his actions during intense enemy fire. Earl exposed himself to artillery, mortar and small arms fire in order to direct US artillery on enemy positions.

Earl also served in Vietnam as a military advisor in 1965.

Lt. Colonel Lochhead enjoyed a wonderful 25 year career in the military and retired in 1973 in El Paso.

He went on to get his MBA at UTEP and taught business classes at El Paso Community College until the age of 70.

Earl is remembered by family, friends and co-workers as a kind hearted person with a dry sense of humor, a willingness to give of himself for others and a love of music and poetry.

Earl was predeceased by his oldest son Charles and his wife of 55 years, Isabel.

Earl is survived by his two sons and three grandchildren.

Lieutenant Colonel Earl James Lochhead, Jr. of Austin and El Paso will be missed by all who knew him.
