William E. ?Bill? Marfuggi, former NJ State Treasurer, West Point Graduate (Class of 49) and a resident of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, passed away on August 21, 2001, after an extended struggle with cancer. Bill was a long time resident of New Jersey having lived in Shorts Hill, Bernardsville, Morristown and Bedminster before moving to Florida. Bill was most known for his commitment to family, loyalty to friends, his integrity and dedication to his community, state and country.

Born in 1923, he graduated class of ?42 from Bloomfield High School, Bloomfield, NJ. Bill captained his football and track teams and earned All State honors in football and Gold Medalled in the Penn Relays of ?40. Upon graduating from Bloomfield High School, Bill studied at Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ and Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. In 1944 Bill enlisted in the US Army and after graduating OCS he received his comission as Lieutenant. Shortly thereafter Bill received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point graduating with the class of ?49. It was during his days at West Point that he met Rose Salierno, the two were married shortly after his graduation from the "Point". Their partnership in life was a model for all to admire and emulate. Bill served his country as a captain in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1953 after a serious back condition ended his promising military career.

After settling in Short Hills, NJ, Bill?s call to serve civic and charitable organizations extended beyond his family neighborhood. He served and dedicated himself as Chairman of the Board of Regents, Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ; Member of the Board of Trustees, The Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child, Summit, NJ; Member of the Board of Laity, Archdiocese of Newark, NJ; Member of the Board of Trustees of the Veterans Council of New Jersey; Member of the Board of Trustees of the Cerebral Palsy Rehabilitation Institute of New Jersey (CPRINJ). While on the Board of CPRINJ, Bill served as Vice Chairman and then Co-Chairman of the Thunderbird Golf Classic and The Dow Jones Golf Classic, Upper Montclair Country Club, Montclair, NJ furthering the CPRINJ fundraising efforts on a national stage. He was also active in the Columbian Foundation and West Point Society. His Papal Appointment as a Knight of Saint Gregory recognizes his unselfishness to others.

Through Bill?s club memberships he made friends across the United States at Suburban Golf Club, Union, NJ; Windham Mountain Club, Windham, NY; Ironwood Country Club, Palm Desert, California; Somerset Hills Country Club, Bernardsville, NJ; Tiro A Segno, New York City, NY; The Skeeters, New York City, NY and most recently at Sawgrass Country Club, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Bill?s dedication to community services transcended party lines and both Republican and Democratic Governors called him upon to serve the State. Bill was appointed State Treasurer in ?73 by then Governor William Cahill. While Treasurer, a career highlight was the building of ?The Meadowlands? by authority of the State Treasurers Office and orchestrated by his dear, dear friend David A. ?Sonny? Werblin, Chairman of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority.

After serving out his term as State Treasurer, Bill was asked to stay on as Treasurer by succeeding Democratic Governor Brendan Byrne. Although Bill respectfully declined, he was appointed by Governor Byrne to serve the State on numerous occasions as a Special Trustee to Resorts International Hotel and Casino Atlantic City, NJ Caesars Resort and Casino Atlantic City, NJ, Bally?s Resort and Casino Atlantic City, NJ and again as a Commissioner on the New Jersey Racing Commission.

In business, Bill served as Chairman of the Board, Victory Optical Manufacturing Company, Newark, NJ where he spent the majority of his professional career. Other business appointments included; Member of the Board of Directors, Broad National Bank, Newark, NJ; Member of the Board of Directors, Howard Bank, Livingston, NJ; Member of the Board of Directors, Public Service Electric and Gas, Newark, NJ and most recently as Chairman of the Board of Directors, TMC Enterprises, Livingston, NJ.

All of whom Bill touched in his lifetime were privileged. Beloved brother to now deceased Philip, Rex, Ben and Louise, his most beloved wife Rose survives Bill as his devoted partner, friend and life mate of 55 years. A giant in the eyes of his children; William Jr. and Sheila, Vincent James and Karen, Victoria Rose and Owen. ?Pi?, as he will be forever loved and remembered by his grandchildren; William III, Cristina, Sarah, Hunter, Kathleen, Patrick, Maximillian and Morgan.

The anchor in our lives, spirit of our family, loved always and will forever and ever be ?UNBELIEVABLE?.
