In 1944 he went to civilian flight school, and then enlisted in the Army Air Force.

In 1945 he entered West Point and was graduated in the Class of 1949. He attended the Ground General School at Fort Riley, Kansas, and The Artillery School at Fort Sill, and completed Air Force Advanced Multi-Engine Pilot Training at Vance Air Force Base. He served as a pilot in Germany, France and Morocco, and was in the Office of Special Investigations (OSI) as a German, French, Spanish and Russian linguist and analyst.

After transferring to the USAF Reserve, he founded Atwood Richards Inc. It became the largest advertising media company in the U.S. in 1968 when it merged with Chemway, a listed company on the NYSE.

He was an Underwriting Member of Lloyd's of London for 20 years, and Chairman of the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors of Superscope/Marantz, NYSE, representing SONY.

As a plaintiff, Dick prosecuted a number of landmark cases in federal courts on behalf of victims of insider trading, ponzis, and fraud.

In 1976 he moved to Rancho Santa Fe in San Diego and was owner and Publisher of Ranch & Coast Magazine. He built a horse ranch and bred, trained, and raced thoroughbred horses.

In 2006, he won four gold medals in the San Diego Senior Swimming Olympics.

Richard is the author of two books (as of 2015): Black Gold Gray Action from WWII To Iraq. The Gripping saga based on the composite actual lives of 8 outstanding West Point 1949 classmates who survived WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam, and then went on a secret mission in 2004. The action moves from Saudi Arabia to Iraq, through Germany and into Paris, down to Morocco, and into the Sahara. This expose reveals conspiracies in Washington, London, and the Middle East and the reasons for American military involvement in Iraq.

On Borrowed Time Memoires from childhood to the present in short story form. The stories include many famous people. To be published in 2015.
