EDWARD K. YELLMAN Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired) Col. Edward Keller Yellman, a longtime resident of Alexandria, Virginia passed peacefully at home on January 4, 2016.

Col. Yellman was born February 22, 1925 in Lexington, Kentucky the second son of John Scott and Edna Keller Yellman.

He entered the US Army four months after graduating from high school in 1943.

In 1945 he received an appointment to West Point. He graduated and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant with the class of 1949.

Col. Yellman had a long and distinguished career, having served in Germany, Korea, France, and Vietnam and many stateside assignments. During his military career he commanded a battalion in Vietnam, served on the US Army staff, and on the staff of the Supreme Allied Commander Europe. His awards and decorations included the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Metal Pendant, Joint Service Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Commendation Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Staff ID Badge, and NATO staff ID Badge.

In addition to the US Military Academy, Col. Yellman''s education included a Master''s degree in Engineering from The University of Massachusetts. He also attended the University of Kentucky and Cornell University. He was a graduate of the Army Command and Staff College and the Armed Forces Staff College.

After retiring from the Army, Col. Yellman spent 12 years as the Business Manager of Woodbridge Campus, Northern Virginia Community College.

He was a longtime member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Alexandria, Virginia, and St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Bonita Spring, Florida where the Yellman family owned a winter home.

He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He was appointed by the Governor to the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. He was also a member of the Military Officer Association and the American Legion.

Col. Yellman was an active supporter of the Special Olympics organization.

Col. Edward K Yellman is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Eunice Palmer Yellman and was the devoted father of five children: Edward Jr Yellman, James P. (Carol) Yellman, Michael L. (Nelly) Yellman, Gregory S. (Kimberly) Yellman, Donna Y. (Fausto) Vasquez, and nine grandchildren: Valeri, Eric (Kayla), Kevin (Sara), Morgan, Daniel, Taylor, Alison, Cristian, Jessica, and was expecting a great granddaughter in June 2016.

Friends may call at the Demaine Funeral Home, 520 South Washington Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314 where family will be present on Friday, January 8, 2016 from 5 to 8 p.m.

A mass of Christian burial will be offered on Saturday, January 9 at 1 p.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church, 2907 Popkins Lane, Alexandria, Virginia 22306.

Graveside services with full military Honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Class of 1949 Fund, Association of Graduates, U.S Military Academy, at 698 Mills Road, West Point, New York 10996.
