Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Hugh Hoffman, '48 on April 13, 2008:

Lew Zichel and I were Cadets at USMA together for three years. We were in the same company for the last two years of our association there. I was not close to Lew at the time, but two years later we were to meet again, this time on the battlefields of Korea in August of 1950. He joined C Company, 5th Cavalry Regiment (Infantry) while we were on the Naktong River, He became a platoon leader and served as such most of the ytear he was in Korea. He saw much combat as an infantryman. Lew became a Colonel before he retired. It wasn’t until after we retired that we began to correspond by email and I learned of his combat experiences with ”C” Company. Also I learned of his continued association with the Military Academy. He became a mentor of the Jewish Cadets and the Chapel, visiting West Point often in the later years as he lived near by. Lew’s devotion to the Academy was evident by his actions even as he weakened physically. He earned his “well done.” Now be thou at peace.
