USMA Class of 1949. Cullum No. 17322.
He was the oldest man in his class and one of two African Americans in the Class of 1949.

He was the son of Charlie Smith and Daisy Morgan Smith, both born in Mississippi.

Both of his parents passed away shortly after his birth and he was raised by his aunt, Mrs. Lucy Morgan Gregory (born about 1902 in Mississippi) in St. Louis, Missouri.

On June 8, 1949, he married Ruth Elizabeth Berrien at Highlands, New York.
They were the parents of one child.

On October 27, 1970 as Charles Lee Smith, he married Ollie Mae Shannon Crumpton at Concord, New Hampshire.

In 1990, he married his second wife, Geny Trefiliolee, a citizen of Brazil.
