Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Vladimir (Jake) Jakovenko on April 6, 2011:

I had the Honor to serve under Lieutennant General Jack V. Mackmull's Command in US Army Special Forces. One day at Smoke Bomb Hill area we had some 50 VIP's vist and one was a Russian Three Star General. It was still the cold war era and a frosty relations between USA and Russia. Evidently no Russian Interpeter was laid on. General Mackmull I guess asked DCO Colonel Norton to get me since I spoke Russian. I arrived at Main Officers Club and the entourage was ready to leave for departure to Pope AFB. I was escorted to a sedan where General Mackmull was with the Russian General. After getting in the sedan I introduced myself to the Russian as Master Sergeant Jakovenko after I spoke The Russian General called me a (Hahole)a derogatory name for Ukranians by Russians. I said back, all do respect General,If I'm a Hahole then You must be a (Katsap)a very derogatory name to the Russians coming from Ukranian. Lot more to the story, but General came back to his HQ and Colonel Norton was waiting. General Mackmull said "Thank God, Jake did not start WWIII" COL. Norton said did ya put it to the Russki? I said I saluted and gave him same respect I would any Three Star General! Come to find out later the Three Star Russian General was Commander of the Russian GRU. Until That Time General, When The Bugle Blows.
