Glenn Edward McChristian

Born December 6, 1928 -- Died January 22, 2013

Glenn Edward "Mac" McChristian was born in Fayetteville, Arkansas on 6 December 1928 and was appointed to West Point from the 3rd Congressional District.

At West Point his classmates made the following observations: "`Mac' is that good looking guy inevitably located next to the mail box about 1030 each day and a product of whom Arkansas may be proud. Possessing a real aptitude for math `Mac' not only stood near the top of the class yearly, but helped bring others through the grind. Although he was exiled to the 35th Division cow year, no one could miss his smile or drawl when he came back. G-1 wishes `Mac' the best of luck."

During his cadet years Mac earned his numerals on the Rifle Team, was on Bugle Notes all four years, he earned stars his cow year, and was a Cadet Lieutenant his first class year.

On graduation Mac went in the Corps of Engineers and after completing the Basic Engineer Course at Fort Belvoir, Virginia reported to the 21st Engineer Combat Battalion where he served through 1952. His next assignment was to Korea with the 1092nd Engineer Combat Battalion where he served until 1953. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for distinguished heroism against an enemy on completion of his tour. Next Mac went back to school and earned a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State College in 1959. On graduation he was assigned as an instructor at the Army's Caribbean School where he served from 1959 to 1963. From 1963 to 1965 Mac was assigned to the Reactors Group in the Office, Chief of Engineers, United States Army. Then from 1965 to 1966 Mac went to Military Assistance Command, Vietnam and was awarded a second Bronze Star Medal for distinguished heroism against an enemy. On return to stateside Mac was appointed Commanding Officer of an Engineer Combat Battalion and he served as such until 1967. Then in 1968 Mac went back to school again, this time to the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Virginia. From 1968 to 1970 Mac served in the Office, Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Department of the Army.
He was decorated with the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services on completion of his tour. Then he reported to the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, this time to Headquarters where he served through 1971. He was awarded a second Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services. He returned to the Office, Chief of Engineers and served until 1972. Mac was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for conspicuously meritorious performance of duty in a non-combat situation on completing this tour. In 1972 Mac returned to the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam for a third time and served until 1973. He was awarded a third Bronze Star Medal for distin-guished heroism against an enemy on completing his duties.

Returning to stateside Mac was assigned to The Engineer School, Fort Belvoir, Virginia and served there until 1976.

Mac accepted his last military assignment in 1976 to Readiness Region 6 and served until 1979 when he retired in rank of Colonel.

Since retirement Mac was at the Rayway Hospital from 1979 to 1983. Mac and his wife Catherine made their home in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Catherine preceded Glenn, she passed away in 2002.
