Greatness Defined

Donald Albert McGann

The Beautiful McGann Family

I am humbled by having the opportunity to recall my thoughts on GREATNESS. Greatness may be described in a myriad of measures. I choose here to define Greatness in my reflective memories of a lifetime association with my West Point Classmate Don...Donald Albert McGann (1927-2019).

This will be somewhat of an unconventional tribute as I am not detailing Don's courageous combat actions in the dangerous skies over Korea in 1952-1953. His military record recalls his glory with such coveted awards as The Distinguished Service Medal, The Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service Medal.

My first meeting with Don occurred when we were randomly teamed up in the United States Military Academy at West Point in August of 1947. I called this occasion the clam after the thunder of Plebe Beast Barracks. I was captured by his contagious smile. As our freshman year progressed, my first impression was confirmed, unconditionally. His wonderful, positive attitude kept the difficult plebe year at West Point bearable.

Don's character was formed solidly by his impeccable integrity. His profound belief in the Lord led him to wholesome decisions easily. When confronted with conflicts, his path was constantly ruled with what is right! He bothered naught with the world's inconsistencies. His penchant preached; "You will be surprised what can be accomplished if you don't care who gets the credit." (General George C. Marshall).

Generosity and thankfulness was commonplace in Don's every day actions. In our Senior year (First Class Year) we were allowed to purchase an automobile. My family's financial condition prevented me from a purchase, yet Don's did. On weekend passes he would often offer his car to me telling me, "Take my car and go enjoy your Tulip." Tulip was my finance Iris and future wife of 65 years. What eternal strength of charity.

These musings, while seemingly mundane, reflect the basis of what real character is based on, what real greatness is based on: love for all, respect for all, untarnished integrity and love of God and Country. These are the precious gifts that Don and his beautify wife Elaine have given us.
I love you Don. The world loves you as well God Bless!
Your Roommate
