Walter Bernard Miller, Jr.

Born April 24, 1929 - Died February 6, 1986


Walter Bernard "Wally" Miller, Jr. was born in Cleveland, Ohio on 24 April 1929 and was appointed to West Point from the 21st Congressional District.

His West Point classmates recall: "Always amiable with a whimsey for dreaming, Wally supplemented by a flair for the light fantastic and numerous mundane jokes, brighten the somber grey for the more realistic. He mastered academics early and followed an attraction for extracurricular athletics and New York's Great White Way when the chance arose. Usually non-partisan, Wally is easy to know, easier to like."

During his cadet days Wally was with the Russian Club yearling, cow and first class years; went out for Football yearling year; was on the Dialectic Society, on the Pointer Staff and with the Art Club cow and first class years; with the Model Railroad Club cow year, and was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year.

Upon graduation Wally went in the Artillery and after completing the Basic Artillery Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma reported to the 11th Airborne Division where he served from 1951 to 1952. Wally's next assignment was with the 70th Airborne Field Artillery Battalion in Germany from 1952 to 1955 and then was named Battery Commander with the 76th Field Artillery Battalion where he served until 1956.

From 1956 to 1958 Wally served as Battery Commander with the 501st Brigade, 101 Airborne Division. In 1959 Wally earned a Master of Science degree from Tulane University and in 1960 resigned his commission as a Captain and accepted a position with the IBM Corporation where he served from 1960 to 1967.

Wally died on February 6, 1996.
