Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Rev. (ret.) Kurt Oberschaefer on January 15, 2022:

From 1977 to 1985, I was working as a military pastor in the German army. Thereafter, I was based in Washington, D.C as the German Protestant Chaplain for the U.S.A and Canada from 1980 to 1985. I remember well my on-boarding visit to the Pentagon with the Chief of Chaplains, Major General Kermit D. Johnson in 1980. Right off the bat he asked me, "Tell me something about the peace movement in Germany." I felt proud of myself for having an association with such a very important person. I was fascinated with him from the start and was very thankful for having encountered him. His extraordinary military and theological knowledge enriched and shaped my work as a military pastor. He was to me a fatherly friend and model of faith. He fearlessly and bravely gave witness to these beliefs in the military environment. What an example for those who care for the souls of military persons throughout the world!

With respect I say goodbye to Kermit and I share my sadness with Lynn and her family.
