Douglas Fredrick Wainer

Born December 10, 1925 - Died March 26, 2003

Douglas Fredrick "Doug" Wainer was born in Norwalk, Connecticut on 10 December 1925 and was appointed to West Point from the 22nd Congressional District.

His West Point classmates recall: "Having been a first lieutenant before entering West Point, Doug might possibly have come here in order to better obtain the other man's 'view.' Bringing the personality of the Nutmeg State to the Academy with him and the attributes of a fine athlete, he and his ever ready smile will certainly be missed by all. His unassuming manner and determination for success will carry him far in his Army career."

While at West Point Doug went out for Cross Country and Track all four years. He also played Handball, was on the Debate Council, the Fishing and Radio Clubs. Doug was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year.

On graduation Doug went in the Signal Corps and after completing the Basic Signal Corps at Fort Momouth, New Jersey went to the Army Aviation School at San Marcos, Texas. On completion of flying school Doug was assigned to The Artillery School, Fort Sill, Oklahoma where he attended the Basic Artillery Course. Doug was then assigned to the Aviation Section, 96th Field Artillery Battalion in Korea. On completion of his tour he was awarded the Air Medal for meritorious achievement beyond that normally expected, while participating in aerial flight. Doug retired from the United States Army in 1969 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

The August/September 1997 Assembly, notes; "Doug and Yoshi Wainer now live the good life in the Seattle area. John Hemphill has been in contact and indicates they seem well settled in the northern part of the city. They are a welcome addition to the small group."

Doug and his wife Yoshi made their home in Seattle, WA. Doug died on March 26, 2003. Doug' remains were scattered over both the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans in accordance to his wishes.
