Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Robert W. Milburn on April 19, 2018:

April12,1961 marked centennial of Firing on Ft Sumter, and the steamer Star of the West. Re-enactment included a company of Citadel Cadets marching to "The Battery" to fire the first shot. The chosen Co was T Co (Best drilled in the Regt) and their Tac was Capt. Ernest G. Rose USAF. Appropriate uniforms were provided to include a large white horse for Ernie to ride as he stood in for the CO of 1861, and Ernie led the Cadets down Broad St to the Battery where they met up with Gen. Mark Wayne Clark (president of the Citadel) who played the role of Sen Edmund Ruffin who in 1861 pulled the first lanyard. Ernie who said he had never been that close to a horse before, rode proudly and did not fall off. I was the Regimental Tac and in the three years of my tour Ernie always had the best drilled Company in the Regt., he was an outstanding officer and I was fortunate to serve with him.
