Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Gordon Tillery on April 22, 2019:

I served in Frank Benedict's artillery battalion - the 4th Battalion of the 14th Field Artillery Regiment - at Fort Sill, in 1968 - 1969. He was a fine man, a true gentleman, and a good battalion commander. It was my first assignment in the Army, so he was an excellent role model for me to observe from my lowly status a newly commissioned officer. A highlight in my life was when he promoted me to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. With pride, he told me he was pinning on me the same 1st Lieutenant's rank insignia that was pinned on him when he was promoted in 1954 (I think that was the year). I later lost that rank insignia which I will always regret - but at least I have the memory, and a photo of that occasion sits on my desk. (Note: if a family member wishes, I would be happy to send a copy of that photo - Colonel Benedict has a big smile. Colonel Benedict was concerned for the welfare of the soldier, as every leader must be. Hanging on my wall is a color photo of the entire Battalion on the Fort Sill parade field, with Colonel Benedict out front. He made that photo happen, giving each soldier the opportunity to have that memory of their assignment to the 4/14th. I am very happy to have known Frank - although only for a short while, and wish I had had the opportunity to meet him again.
