Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Colonel (Ret.) Robert W. Hatch on October 8, 2013:

General Heiberg will always hold a special place in the memories of my own thirty year military career in the Army Corps or Engineers. From the time I was a Plt Ldr in Company D. 10th Engineer Bn , 3rd Inf Div in 1961, to my last Command assignment as Brigade Cdr, 18th Engineer Bde, Karlsrhue,Germany, to Ft.Benning as Facilities Engineer in 1988, Gen. Heiberg's guidance to me in those 2nd Lt. days bore fruit. He personally was involved in my being selected to the last two jobs. I will always remember him as the consummate professional organizational leader and engineer. I personally observed his inexhaustible supply of innovative ideas that always resulted in successful accomplishment of whatever mission assigned.

I would be remiss, if I didn't also mention the example he and Kitty set for my wife, Jessica, and I in those early formative years of military life. I'm sure there are hundreds of other husband and wife teams, that would affirm my thoughts. They demonstrated how it was possible to have a successful career, and at the same time, ensure a successful marriage. Kitty showed all the young wives, including mine, how to maintain normalcy in the family during periods of separation of field duty, or unaccompanied short tours.

General Heiberg personified what General Mac Arthur must have had in mind, when he uttered those famous words, "Duty, Honor, Country."
