Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Gregory Smith, PE on December 3, 2020:

Col. Robert Ayers was one of my greatest mentors when I came to work for him at Brown & Root, well after he'd retired from his first job as an Army officer. I had just left the Navy, and while Brown & Root Services was loaded with former Army Officers, I was the lone Naval Officer, and I asked naively, why there no other Naval Officers? Bob's reply was curt, and really got my goat because he was dead right: "Greg, you're the only Navy guy we've found that will actually work!" That started a long and satisfying career working for Bob in a diverse variety of exciting, fun, and important jobs. Bob cemented my career in the civilian world, and I credit him with the success of myself and my family. A fatherly, southern gentleman, Bob always inspired me to be the best that I could be & supported me in both my good & bad decisions. I will sorely miss him.
