Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Haydon Y Grubbs Jr (Aka: Don or Lefty)/ Cl '53 on June 23, 2009:

To the family of John Brinsko, my wife, Lyn, and I extend our deepest sympathy and prayers.

I have many fond memories of John or "The Bear" as we used to nickname him who was my roommate in the tallest company in the 2nd Regiment (M-2) at West Point along with our other roommate, "Spike" Flertzheim. I was a transfer from company K-2 and was short enough to walk under their arms. So, they called me "Mouse".

"Bear" would stare constantly at a photo of his lovely, beautiful girlfriend whom he married during our room study periods.

I was invited to the wedding right after graduation. I had met the girl of my dreams and spent the day and evening with her in Montclair the day before John's wedding. I left Montclair late at night to drive to John's house to spend the night and be in the wedding the next day. Well, at 3am in the morning, I was driving 50mph in a 30mph zone going the wrong way on a one way street. A cop pulled me over---I had lipstick all over me and looked a sight--- the cop asked where I was going? I said to my roommate, John Brinsko's house for his wedding. The cop said Brinsko is my next door neighbor and mad as heck led me to John's house and no ticket!!!

God bless his soul. I shall miss him greatly, Haydon "The Mouse" Grubbs.
