I felt close affiliation to Bernie because we were both from Washington, DC. He was in the next battalion and we never seamed to get together..Different classroom assignments, different sports and outside interests. During plebe year, I met his parents; they seemed to be more strict than mine had been. On finding out that we would be in the same barracks at Camp Buckner, I asked him to be my bunk-mate. However, I had mandatory surgery and spent 44 days in the hospital...And missed most of Buckner. I always regretted not getting to know Bernie better. |
