Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Col. (Retired) Richard L. Quinn on September 20, 2017:

I served as Rick's Executive Officer when he commanded the 2nd Squadron, 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Lewis, Washington. In over 30 years of service, I never met a finer officer or better man! He took over a unit that was plagued with all the ills that grew out of the Vietnam era. He never gave into the pressures of the moment and always maintained the highest professional standards. He was no martinet, but a solid, competent, professional in every respect. His positive attitude was infectious and inspired those around him.

I joined the Regiment after my second tour in Vietnam. The chaos I found at Ft. Lewis, coupled with the disastrous state of the Army I had just left, nearly drove me to the point of despair. Although I loved the Army, I was ready to quit. Rick was the guy who turned me around, Through his example, I learned to use what I had to deal with difficult situations and how to build for the future, one step at a time.

Rick Vandermeer was one of the dedicated professionals who helped to rebuild the shattered Army of the 70's in to the magnificent force we have today. Rest in Peace my friend, you have served your country well!

Brave Rifles!!
