James Lawrence Jackson Army Colonel


James Lawrence Jackson, 73, a retired Army colonel who served as an international military liaison in Asia and Latin America, died Nov. 20 at Inova Fairfax Hospital. He had lung cancer.
Col. Jackson, who lived in Oakton, was a native of Monmouth, Ill. He began his 30-year military career as an enlisted Army paratrooper in the late 1940s and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1953.
He was an Army Ranger who served with the Green Berets in Da Nang, Vietnam, in 1964 and 1965. After assignments in Korea, Panama and Taiwan, he was stationed at the Pentagon, where he supervised an intelligence section. He retired from active military duty in 1980.
He was a member of the 101st Airborne Division Association.
He also was an avid dog breeder who bred boxers.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Lucille Jackson of Oakton; four children, James L. Jackson Jr. of Hartland, Wis., Donna Franceil Jackson of Richmond, Bruce Robert Jackson of Bloomington, Ill., and Jeffrey Ward Jackson of Hartwood, in Stafford County; a sister; two brothers; and eight grandchildren.
