Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jim Tighe on November 21, 2010:

I served under then-Major John Ceglowski in Vietnam in the mid-1960's. I knew him as a dedicated, sincere officer and a fine human being as well. He had a wry sense of humor and he would share a joke if he trusted you.

Major Ceglowski had a lively interest in the natural world, and was curious about the unusual vegetation in tropical Vietnam. His driver said the Major would remark on green plants along the highway, and he would know them by name.

I met him again after he'd been promoted to Lt. Colonel. He related that he was amused at the formality at USARV headquarters. Shortly after arriving at his new duty station, he'd gone to lunch and had mistakenly sat down at a table where full colonels usually sat. An embarrassed orderly discreetly alerted him that he'd committed a faux pas.

John Ceglowsi was truly a straight-arrow kind of guy. He was proud to be a soldier and he inspired a similar pride among his associates. I am sorry to learn of his passing. He was a good man.
