Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Philomena Weatherby on July 17, 2008:

Yale and I were terribly sad when we read that Brad had died. Yale and he knew each other at school. When we lived in California we were friends with Brad and June. They had a A-N game party at their house, which included some classmates, and we picked up and had follow-up ones at our house. We also took the Honholts with us to WP San Franciso Society party. The traffic was really slow coming home...actually barely moving. We were driving a convertible with the top down, and Brad began to sing "Do you know the way to San Jose?". Some guy in the next car thought we really wanted directions on how to get to San Jose, and proceeded to tell us.....much to our amusement! Brad was fun, and sometimes I wasn't sure if I should believe him or not. He told me the telephone where he came from was a sort of party line and that he didn't know how to use a dial phone when he came to West Point. Knowing Brad he may have been fooling me at the time and a bunch of upper classmen when he was a plebe ... or not. Some time after we had moved away from California we all attended the class 25th reunion. Brad and June came with another classmate in a motor home, which was good for them as they were right at West Point, and the rest of us were in a motel in Suffern NY and had to drive to all the events. After the reunion was over they drove down to where we lived in Virginia. There were a few of their classmates who had not been at the reunion they wanted to see. We had a party for them in our apartment in the high rise building, where we lived. What was particularly a moving occasion for me, was that one of their classmates they wanted to see and be with had been dianosed with cancer, which had caused his face to be somewhat disfigured. I was very touched to see how these men loved this man so much and how glad they were to see him. He later died, and although they were not then there with us, we did attend his burial in Arlington. This was a new look at people like Brad....big guy with a big heart.

Many years later after we retired and Brad and June had too, and were traveling the country in their motor home, they came to see us in Plano, Tx where we were living. We had such a good time with Brad ..... who was still as funny as ever, and enjoyed he and June so much.

We had just been talking about how we should invite them to drive down to where we now live in Mexico. We thought they would enjoy a trip like that. We waited too long, and now Brad is gone. Although we hadn't seen him for a while, we will miss him. Still think of him as a big guy, with a big heart.

Rest in peace dear friend....you were truly special....and we do know the way to San Jose....
