Newell E. Vinson

West Point, 1954

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Thomas N. Vinson Jr. on August 29, 2005:

Col. Newell E. Vinson was my uncle. My earlest memories of Uncle Newell were conversations between my parents of where around the world Uncle Newell was. My father always spoke in a very proud manner of his brother and his accomplishments, which always made me wonder personally about this brother that my father held in such high esteem. One day my Uncle and his whole family arrived at my parents home Aunt Pat, cousins Patti, David, Mark and a baby boy Douglas. Their lives were so different than mine or any one else that I knew. They seemed very goal orented. I was told that they were going to accomplish a whole list of things that I had not even thought of trying to do. Later in life Uncle Newell was in a procurment job at the pentagon and came to visit, he was happy to see us, dine with us and especially talk to his brother. I saw him in less of a my uncle in the military view and a more open and warmer view, he talked about his family and how proud he was of them. I saw him again when my father was dying and he talked about some regrets and I felt from listening to his stories that he always tried to do what was right and that he had no qualms about letting other people know what the right thing to do was. I liked that about him. Shortly before he passed I was able to introduce him to my family and he treated us very graciously all the while being sure to tell me, what he was sure I should be doing. I felt his caring concern and love that I shall always miss.
