Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Victor M. (Vic) Fernandez on November 29, 2011:

I did not know George at West Point. He was Class of 1954, M-2 (flanker), and I am Class of 1959 - A-2 (runt). I met him in 1991, when I joined HB&A, an Architect and Planning Firm in Colorado Springs. He was a Senior Planner there, and taught me the trade of a urban planner. We worked on Military Base Planning, and he was my mentor in this first job after retirement from the Army.

Years later, after we were both retired-retired, I had founded a Veterans committee to establish a National Veterans Cemetery in the Pikes Peak Region to serve the veterans of Southern Colorado, and needed help to write plans to be presented to the VA. I asked George to join the committee, and to write the plans. He actually wrote two different plans which presented a menu of ten possible sites tor VA consideration. In 2008, we presented one of the plans to the Undersecretary of Veterans Affairs, which he accepted and began the process to establishment of the Pikes Peak National Veterans Cemetery. Because of George's efforts in writing the plans, the veterans of Southern Colorado will have an appropriate final resting place in 2014, with Pikes Peak in the background.

The Committee and I are sorry that we could not complete the work before his Lord took him to his home. George will join his wife in the sacred ground of Ft. Logan National Veterans Cemetery in Denver.

We can only say "Well Done! Be thou at Peace!"
