Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Ronnie Robertson on April 10, 2012:

Bob and Bill Robertson are identical twins born in Davenport, Oklahoma in 1930. They met Elmer Allred in their late teens and remained friends for life. When I was a little kid I thought Elmer hung the moon. He was a fighter pilot and to me, he was a hero. I remember going with my dad Bob, to pick Elmer up at the airport. Of course it wasn't a regular airport. It was Carswell Air Force Base or the Dallas Naval Air Station. I remember at the end of one of his visits, we took him to Carswell so he could fly out to his next destination. He got permision for my dad to park by a fence on the side of the runway so I could see him take off. I don't remember what he was flying but I do remember him taking off...wheels up...and then straight up. I mean straight up until he was out of sight. I'll never forget that. Another time our family was on our houseboat in New Mexico and my dad told me Elmer was going to fly by. He pointed for me to watch a certain place on the horizon. Then I saw the speck in the sky coming down to just above the water level. Then the speck got real close, real fast and then I heard the sound of jet engines. Then he was gone, except for the sound of those engines. Elmer I can almost hear those engines now. I'm sorry I can't see you though. We miss you.
Ronnie
