Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Yale and Philomena Weatherby on July 28, 2012:

Howard was best man at our wedding on that rainy Sunday afternoon 56 years ago, 18 December 1955, at Ft. Bragg, NC. After leaving the area, we understood Howard later left the Army, and we lost touch for many years. His beautiful wife, Marylin, died young. When we were living in Northern Virginia 40 years later, we made contact with Howard who was living in the area also. Sometimes he would come with us to class parties at Ft. Myer. He also connected with classmate Moe Blum. Both had been in the Jewish choir at the Academy. Apparently they shared many laughs together. Moe at the time was suffering from MS, but like Howard, lived alone.

Howie wrote poetry, apparently even at the Academy. He told us once that one English teacher at school had told him to keep on writing, but another thought he might just be wasting time. He gave me a booklet of his love poems, and another book of poetry he had written. I loved the poems, and treasure the books. From a woman's point of view, Howie was a real romantic....I could tell that from the love poetry. But also his poetry had some humor about love affairs gone wrong!!! You had to appreciate that too.

He had a interesting life. He was a talented, intelligent man....both as a cadet, but also as he grew older. I liked it very much when he would come out with us. But I have to admit....I never thought any of the women he brought with him, were really quite up the standards he deserved.

He used to send me a fruitcake.....I don't think it was because he thought nuts to the nuts, but because I really liked them, and he knew it. He was thoughtful that way.

We loved you Howie....you were a treasure, and we will miss you.
