Be Thou At Peace

Lt Westervelt was our Platoon Leader in F Co, 505th Abn Inf, 82nd Abn Div. It was his first unit command after graduation from the USMA. Lt Westervelt impressed us as squared away soldier, which we attributed to his academy background. He was an excellent field commander and always fair to the enlisted ranks. He counseled me to apply for an EM billet to West Point, and gave me his "Plebe Bible" as my first intro to life as a cadet. I applied, but unfortunately the approval process had not run its course before my enlistment expired. Instead, I returned home and completed college on the GI Bill. Since then, I've always posed this question to all "ring knockers" I've met: "How is the cow?" RIP Col Westervelt |
