Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Daniel Ludiwg on June 27, 2013:

Adding Vane Quentin Bates to the list of deceased in the Class of 1955 records is a somber act for me, because I have been expecting him to outlive us all. During cadet years, I did not get to know Quent until we were selected by our company Tacs to participate in an AF sponsored tour in Europe during summer 1954 that included England, Germany, Austria, and France. At graduation, we both chose Army Engineers for our branch of service, and I expected that he would eventually reach the highest ranks in the Corps. Quent decided to resign his commission after three years of active duty, and it was not until 1999 on a Class tour of Greece that we were united again. From that time until recently, we were together most summers on Class tour cruises in Europe where we discussed our respective engineering careers, our membership in Rotary International, and our daily exercises. On those trips I learned to admire his success in reaching the top of his firm that designed elevators throughout the USA and overseas. When traveling on business near the east coast, Quent would occasionally stop for a visit at our home and share a meal. During years 2000-2005, Quent and I connected occasionally during our service on the Class Ex Com when he served as Class Treasurer. It is distinctly satisfying to review these memories of him, for he was a person to be admired for his intellect, professionalism, leadership, devotion to family, faith in God, and dedication to West Point. I among numerous others will certainly miss his presence.
