It was my loss not to have known Quent well in our Cadet and early Army years. As I watched Quent's success, achievements and contributions, to his family, his Church, his profession, and our Class and West Point, through our decades of life, I was quite aware that Vane Quentin Bates was an extraordinary Classmate. What the Army lost -- a lot -- with Quent's early transition, his community, his profession and the Nation gained, many times over: a leader of character and distinction!
