Colonel William Wiley Brown USA Retired February 9, 1934 - April 17, 2018 Colonel William W. Brown, USA, Retired, 84, of Hanover, MD, died April 17, 2018. William (Bill), the husband of Sandra M. Brown, was born February 9, 1934 in Hinds County, Mississippi to Thomas Monte Brown and Louella Pullen Brown. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Margery Fulton. Bill leaves behind his wife, Sandra M. Brown and their two sons, Thomas Brown (VA), his wife, Carole and their three children, Alexander, Christina, and Michelle, and Timothy Brown (MD), his wife, Lisa, and two children, Collin and Cameron. Bill Brown was a proud graduate from the United States Military Academy (West Point) class of 1955. Bill achieved his Bachelor of Science degree at West Point and then later Master of Science degree in Geodetic Science from The Ohio State University. Additionally, Bill graduated from the US Army Command General Staff College, and the Army War College. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers and was stationed in many locations across the United States and the world. Over the course of his career, Bill was awarded numerous military medals to include a Vietnam Service Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, an Army Commendation Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, a Bronze Star Medal, and two Legion of Merit Medals. After 27 years of service Bill retired from active duty in the US Army as a Colonel in 1983. Bill and Sandra settled in Hanover, MD. Following his retirement from the Army, Bill joined BDM Corporation, which eventually became part of Northrop Grumman, and served as a professional logistic engineer, program manager and the director of Space Applications supporting numerous projects for NASA to include launch support activities for the Hubble Telescope in 1990. Bill entered full retirement in 1996. Bill met his bride-to-be, Sandra H. Mathers of Wellsboro, PA, in 1957 while stationed at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii. They married in June 1958. Sandra and Bill enjoyed a long, rich life together with their sons, family, and friends. They were very active in the Fort Meade Main Post Chapel where Bill was an usher and member of the church finance committee for many years. They developed a love for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, fine dining, and traveling to see friends and relatives. One of his greatest joys was supporting Sandra's love of quilting, accompanying her to shows, shops, and road trips to various quilting events. Nothing made him happier than watching her share her quilting with the grandchildren. Whether she was creating quilts for the children to snuggle in or to take to college, together they were weaving their love into each stitch that spread warmth and comfort with the family. Bill and Sandra were looking forward to celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary with their families on June 7th of this year. Bill will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery later this year. A memorial service will be held in conjunction with the burial at the Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home, 7250 Washington Blvd, Elkridge, MD 21075. Dates will be announced when arrangements have been finalized.
