Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dick on January 13, 2002:

Paul was the only D2 Cadet Captain in our Class. He was twice a starman. He had enlisted time before entering West Point. We all knew he would become a high-ranking military officer.
The month after graduation I visited a friend at West Point. Walking across the area, I saw Paul...in the uniform of a Cadet Private!
He explained that he was denied a commission when a physical revealed
that he had bleeding ulcers.
To put me at ease, Paul shared with me a story concerning the close call he and Eleanor had while driving his new car during their honeymoon. The car stalled, and would not start. In the middle of a railroad crossing, with a train bearing down upon them, Paul had the presence of mind to put the car in gear and use the starter to lurch out of harm's way.
He was sad about the military career but satisfied that he and his bride were still alive. They had three daughters who made Paul very proud. Paul was a sucessful manufacturing and engineering manager.
