James Everman Drummond

West Point, 1955

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Bill Haas on October 30, 2012:

On an overcast but very pleasant October 27, 2012, James Everman Drummond was memorialized by nearly 300 people including 13 classmates and 6 class wives.

The celebration of Bulldog's life commenced at 1100 with a traditional service at St. John's Episcopal in Montgomery, AL. The two left front pews, which were reserved for West Point graduates, fell far short of accommodating the large number of graduates and families from several classes and who were in attendance. The seven-person altar liturgical team included Jack and Katherine Jeter who served as Chalice Bearers. The Rector's homily communicated and captured the essence of Jim Drummond's life, spirit, faith, and his dedicated service to his country. Per Jeanne's request, the service included the singing of the Alma Mater by the congregation.

Following the service in the sanctuary, the presiding priest led a processional of the family and congregation to the church yard for the inurnment ceremony. The ceremony concluded with full military honors provided by a Fort Benning 12-man detachment commanded by an O-6 West Point graduate, Class of '94. The folding of the flag, which was presented to Jeanne by the O-6, was precise and crisp. A seven-man squad fired three volleys in absolute unison, and the bugler played a perfect rendition of taps.

Following the inurnment, there was a luncheon reception at the Drummond home which was attended by approximately 150 people. Attending Classmates and wives, who came from seven different states and 11 different cadet companies, were: Roy Dunaway, Phil and Dianne Enslow, Bill and Laura Haas, Bill and Jane Hadly, Jack and Katherine Jeter, Charlie Johnson, Larry and Sybil Michalove, Pembo Pemberton, Dick Prater, Buddy Roberts, Dick Secord, Stan and Carla Sydenham, and Howard Whitaker. The entire Class was represented by a large beautifully arranged display of gold flowers bowed together by a broad gray ribbon on which in bold black letters was inscribed "Class of 1955".

The services and reception with the many attendees provided a most appropriate tribute to a Class icon.
