Joseph Powel Franklin

West Point, 1955

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Rich Cardillo on April 30, 2017:

West Point holds a very special place in my life and it all began with Joe Franklin. On that very bright day in July 1951 after being dropped off by my parents I entered a long line of Classmates to-be in the West Academic Building waiting to sign in. As the line progressed I turned around and was greated by "Hi, my name is Joe Franklin, from Maryland." I responded with,"Hi, my name is Rich Cardillo from New Jersey."

That began a long and sometimes difficult journey with Joe. We took our licks on the field of friendly strife, battled the academic department, and spent many hours eluding the tactical department.

All along the way I knew I was in close contact with a leader. Whether it was in the classroom or on the playing field Joe Franklin led the way. We were classmates first and teammates second but always friends. It was after graduation that Joe and I interacted. In 1965-66 at West Point Joe took the lead of our Class and asked that I head up the Class Memorialization Committee..thus began the saga of "the Class erection."

I never had the opportunity to serve with Joe (except at West Point). Joe was always present at our Class get togethers whether it biking, hiking or just camaraderie Joe was there and was our leader. He was the consummate classmate and leader.

To Connie and the boys, I realize you lost a loving husband and father and I grieve with you. However; Joe left a lasting legacy..love of family, love of service and love of his fellow man..but he also left all of us, his classmates, better soldiers, citizens and family men.

Rest in peace brother until meet again..
