Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Carl H. McNair, Jr. on February 27, 2011:

John Gamble, although wheelchair bound and in declining health, braved the elements and attended the 55th Reunion with the Class of '55. My wife and I were privileged to ride with John and his family in the handicapped van to and from West Point each day. In turn, I was also honored to push his wheelchair in the Alumni March to Thayer Monument (with "Ranger" weather -rain- prevailing) until relieved by two young plebes as we moved onto the deep grass of the Plain.

What a treat to have those hours together in close quarters catching up on the many years in between. Although we were in the same 2d Bn, lst Regt, parading together, class together, and chow together for four years, it was a privilege to renew our friendship with him and meet the family in that week shortly before he passed. The love and admiration of them for him and him for them was so evident and he was so proud as he sat erect in his wheelchair during the Alumni Exercises. John and Mary were a great team and he has left a true legacy behind for those whom he loved.

Rest in Peace, dear Friend and Classmate,

Carl McNair
USMA Class of 1955
